Water resources are increasingly under pressure due to climate change, population growth and economic development. Water utilities are required to deal with high energy consumption, which can account for up to 35% of operational costs, as well as water losses reaching peaks of 60% in some areas of Southern Italy. The sector itself consumes approximately 2.5% of the national electricity demand, highlighting the need for a paradigm shift toward more efficient and sustainable water management.

Addressing these challenges requires a transition toward Smart Water Networks — intelligent infrastructures supported by advanced digital technologies. These systems enable the reduction of waste and water losses, improve energy efficiency, allow continuous monitoring of water quality, and ensure a safer, more reliable and sustainable water service. Watergy is a project aimed at optimizing energy consumption and recovering energy within the water cycle, acting on water supply systems, sewer networks and treatment plants. Its strength lies in the integration of theoretical research and field experimentation, supported by a network of expertise that brings together universities, water utilities and private companies. A concrete example of how innovation can be transformed into real, sustainable and scalable solutions.
