Sewer Networks

SURVEYING AND MAPPING

Before the start of the actual field survey operations, preliminary site inspections are usually carried out in the areas concerned, often together with personnel and technicians from the client. These inspections aim to identify possible operational difficulties during the survey, such as asphalt-covered manholes, provincial or state roads, private areas that are not immediately accessible, inaccessible facilities and structures, or areas not covered by existing cartography or recently developed and not yet updated. These preliminary activities also allow the identification of homogeneous survey zones and the definition of the survey sequence. For each municipality, an optimal survey route is subsequently planned in order to optimize the movements of the survey teams, based on the information collected during the preliminary phase. This approach reduces travel time within the surveyed areas and allows similar activities to be grouped efficiently. In general, the survey begins from a starting section of the network and follows its development across the entire area to be surveyed, progressively covering the branches encountered along the route to ensure that no connecting lines are omitted. During this phase, the entire survey team is deployed, under the supervision of the Survey Coordinator. At the same time as the geometric survey, a topographic survey is carried out by the same team using GPS stations or total stations.

GIS DIGITALIZATION

The digitalization of the network is carried out by data processing technicians, who work in parallel, each assigned to the municipality corresponding to the survey team responsible for that area. This activity begins once the field teams have collected sufficient survey data to start performing the necessary topographic transformations, populating the GIS database, and preparing the first technical records of manholes and survey measurements. The process continues until the completion of all data editing and validation operations.

SEWER NETWORK MONITORING

W.E.E. provides sewer network monitoring services aimed at complying with the requirements established by ARERA (Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment) within the framework of the Technical Quality Regulation of the Integrated Water Service, specifically regarding the M4 macro-indicator – “Adequacy of the Sewer System.” This indicator, whose objective is to minimize the environmental impact resulting from wastewater conveyance, is defined according to a multi-stage assessment approach, considering: the frequency of flooding and/or sewer overflows the regulatory compliance of storm overflow structures the monitoring and control of storm overflow systems

Sewer Master Plans aim to establish a strategic planning tool capable of providing a comprehensive overview of the issues to be addressed, identifying the necessary remedial interventions, and defining their priority and associated costs through multi-criteria analysis.
